OUR SPELLBINDING SOUND LIBRARY
Our two previous magic sound libraries (MAGIC and MAGIC – ARCANE FORCES) were based upon rather classical approaches to magic audio, such as elemental fire, water and ice spells etc. The topic ‘magic’ was deconstructed as a whole to get away from this common theme and concentrate on a more ‘supportive’ sound creation – something that could underline the more intricate of spells, not necessarily only explosive, punchy and powerful ones.
FROM NATURE TO THE AETHER
Keeping the sounds grounded in nature played an important role in achieving this vision, as David Phillip, the project lead for MAGIC – WISP, shared with us:
“…We recorded a lot of real world whooshes, textures and movements to process them into magical swirls, whooshes and so on. To have an organic base was very important to us as we want the library to feel grounded throughout. Also, we recorded a lot of sounds in a self-made sand pit, so channelling the inner child was something that is omnipresent in this library.”
CAPTURING THE MAGIC
We asked David to share with us some technical information for how they were able to create such a diverse and complete set of whimsical magic sounds. “We used a lot of contact mic recordings in addition to our standard Schoeps and Sennheiser MS sets. This allowed us to get a more intricate and unique perspective into our recordings, as well as working with real world stereo movement from one contact microphone to the other – a lot of focus was spent on the performance of each individual prop, as we have found that the performance itself has the biggest impact during recordings for the best results.”
